West Valley City School opened in 1998 to create new learning opportunities for students and families that were looking for high academic standards and instructions in a non-traditional setting. The school's educators focus on experiential learning and development of thinking skills and the students' mastery of the subject. Matthew Phillipy and Stephen Schreiner are both Science Teachers at West Valley City School and enjoy helping students see the "big picture" by incorporating Project-Based Learning and Service Learning projects and also leading by example.
Matthew Phillipy teaches science at West Valley City School. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from The Evergreen State College and a Master's degree in Education from Eastern Washington University. Matthew has been in the West Valley School District since 2003, first as an Americorps Volunteer at the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center, then as a student teacher at Pasadena Park Elementary, and now at City School since 2005. He leads various components at City School: Aquaculture, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Waste Management, KYRS Thin-Air Radio, and the Biodiesel Co-Op.
Steve Schreiner has worked at City School since 2005, teaching science and running the eNEWAL program.
