Outstanding Non-Formal Environmental Educator-Colleen Uuereb
Colleen has been a nonformal environmental educator within the Puget Sound region for almost eight years. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and Geography, as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Her work throughout has focused on a
variety of audiences, from K-12 to college-level classes, and from exclusive community groups to the general public. She worked within the field of water for a short time as the Education and Outreach Director for Citizens for a Healthy Bay, but her current focus has primarily been on solid waste-related issues.
As an educator for Kitsap County Public Works, Colleen increased the number of classroom presentations taught in a year by 217%. With Thurston County Water and Waste Management she has reached almost 3,000 students through solid waste-related presentations. Colleen also coordinates the Master Recycler program made up of trained volunteers eager to spread their recycling knowledge.
Colleen not only facilitates successful programs, but she is also very involved in the Environmental Education community. She was the Lead Coordinator for the Kitsap E3 Summit held in November 2007. She also attended the Thurston/Mason E3 Summit as a table facilitator and the statewide E3 Retreat held in the summer of 2008. She served as a steering team member on the Washington Green Schools team since it first began, which now has 60 participating schools. Colleen also conducted a research project entitled, “Needs-Based Assessment on Certification of Nonformal Environmental Educators” for Washington State.
