President's Award
Nancy McKay
Environmental/Sustainability Program Manager, The Russell Family Foundation
In her years as a genuine force for the environment and environmental education, Nancy has worked for three Washington governors, served as Chair of the Puget Sound Action Team (the agency charged with coordinating the clean up and protection of Puget Sound) and served as Deputy Director and then Executive Director of the Puget Sound Water Quality Authority.
Nancy is a founder and past chair of the Association of National Estuary Programs and a founder and past chair of the Washington Governor’s Council on Environmental Education. Nancy joined The Russell Family Foundation in 2002 as its Environmental/Sustainability Program Manager where she is responsible for guiding the design, implementation and evaluation of the Foundation’s program, which focuses on protecting the waters of Puget Sound through environmental education and sustainable business practices.
She is not only a tireless champion for positive change; she’s a caring, compassionate and wise colleague and friend of the field. Nan’s work represents the best of what we all aspire to be and is a true model to those entering or navigating the fields of sustainability, environmental protection and environmental education. We present this award to Nancy McKay with the hope that others will be inspired by her example and to recognize a career that continues to drive positive change for all who work, learn, live and play in Washington State.
Martin E. Fortin, Jr.
Director of Outdoor Learning Centers, The Washington School Principals Education Foundation and the Association of Washington School Principals
He supervises daily operations encompassing maintenance, personnel, curriculum, finance, and marketing for the Cispus and Chewelah Peak Learning Centers. Marty spent 16 years as a science teacher, coach and activities administrator (15 years in the Yelm Community Schools).
The Environmental Education Association and other EE leaders across the state look to Marty for advice, guidance and leadership. Marty, through his dedication, expertise and commitment to make the world a better place, serves as a role model for those who aspire to make a lasting, positive difference through their life’s work. Marty has provided EEAW with consistent leadership and counsel over the years and we are overdue in thanking him directly for all he has contributed to our organization and to the field at large. On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of children who have been benefited from all that Marty does, we are pleased to have the opportunity to formally express our gratitude through this award.
