Making Connections

in a Diverse World”

March 18-20, 2011

Poulsbo Middle School

Poulsbo, Washington

PLEASE NOTE:  Conference location has changed from Port Townsend to Poulsbo.

We are pleased to announce EEAW's and the Washington Science Teachers Association’s (WSTA) first joint conference, hosted by the Suquamish Tribe.  The conference will address the central role science and sustainability education plays in improving learning, instruction, assessment and college/life preparation of Washington’s diverse students.

•   On Friday, March 18, discover learning resources in the community at sites such as the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, the Olympic Rain Forest, and Taylor Shellfish Labs.

•   On Saturday, March 19, dive into full- and half-day professional development workshops as well as topical short sessions.

•   On Sunday, March 20, prepare to take new findings home with collaborative time and round-table discussions.

This year’s conference title, “Science and Sustainability: Making Connections in a Diverse World” speaks to the central role science and sustainability education plays in improving learning, instruction, assessment and college/life preparation of Washington’s diverse students.

We are pleased to partner this year to highlight the latest in educational research and practice as well as capacity-building in the science and environmental and sustainability education fields.  We welcome educators and stakeholders from all fields and corners of the state.

Among other objectives, we plan to leverage our conference results to help achieve the E3 Washington: Education-Environment-Economy goals to develop a system of education for sustainable communities--a vision that requires the exchange of ideas and resources among innovative professionals.  Thus, we are looking for presenters who can address the latest thinking and tools in the areas of:

•    Connecting to our Students:  Implications for Instruction and Assessment.
•    Connecting to Diverse Populations: Science and Sustainability for All Learners
•    Connecting Professionally: Collaborators, Innovators and Life Long Learners.
•    Connecting to the Natural World:  Science, Technology, Policy and the Environment.

PLEASE NOTE: The WSTA/EEAW Joint spring Conference encourages the presentation of materials that incorporate the Washington State K-12 Science Standards and Environmental and Sustainability Education Standards. We hope that the focus of these presentations will help teachers be more aware of and effectively use research-based, best-practice instructional and assessment strategies to help students become more scientifically and environmentally literate. Presenters are also encouraged to use research-based best practices of professional development.

Request for proposals and sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities will be posted in September.

Registration will begin in the fall.
